Inspirational and riveting, the documentary "I Am" deals with the in-between with science and religion, focusing on what our purpose is as humans and uses scientific data to prove that we really are all connected. The film's Director Tom Shadyac once had it all. He had an expansive Malibu house, with17,000 square feet of space, as well as some expensive art and exotic cars. He had become well-known after his successful movies "Ace Ventura", "Liar Liar" and "Bruce Almighty" and was seemingly living the dream. That was until he was in a cycling accident that left him with broken bones and a severe concussion. He suffered post-concussion disorder, which left him with headaches and depression. But it also changed his perspective. He became disillusioned with life as a filthy rich director. So he sold his mansion and moved to a mobile home community. This inspired him to gather up a film crew and venture out to ask two questions: what is wrong with the world, and how can we fix it? He speaks to Noam Chomsky, author and professor at MIT, Howard Zinn, author and historian, several well-known biologists, psychologists and poets – to pose the question to all of them and then record their answers. He also speaks to Desmond Tutu, a South African archbishop, who says "We are because we belong." Even though at times the film swings between new-agey to being a downer, the core of the film really does inspire. For the science parts, in one scene, viewers see Shadyac sitting in front of a Petri dish full of yogurt, which is hooked up to wires. The scientist with him says that the electromagnetic waves emitting off Shadyac can actually affect the bacteria in the yogurt. So the scientist instructs Shadyac to think about and speak about something that stresses him. Shadyac talks about his lawyer and his agent and the meter wired to the yogurt goes haywire. This is just one of the several interesting experiments Shadyac uses to prove his point, and the points of all those in the documentary, that we are all connected and cooperating with each other, rather than competing with each other.
