Stephen Schwartz, the musical-theater composer and lyricist, whose credits include “Godspell,” “Pippin” and the long-running “Wicked,” which has been playing on Broadway since 2003, had no reason to write an opera. He had nothing to prove. So “Séance on a Wet Afternoon,” his first work in the genre, was a labor of love. The composer's son, Scott Schwartz, directed this recent New York City Opera production. Sets for this and the original production are by Heidi Ettinger, costumes by Alejo Vietti and lighting by David Lander. Séance on a Wet Afternoon opera is a psychological thriller about a medium, Myra Foster, her doting husband Bill, and the spirit of their deceased eleven-year-old son, Arthur, who speaks to Myra and is her contact for her Séances. It is based on the novel by Mark McShane and the award-winning screen adaptation & classic noir film directed by Bryan Forbes. Here, in Schwartz's riveting opera, a mesmerizing Lauren Flanigan stars as an ambitious psychic who orchestrates an elaborate kidnapping scheme so that her “vision” can ensure a successful recovery, a generous ransom, and the fame she so desperately craves.
