Eastbound & Down is an American comedy television series broadcast on HBO, starring Danny McBride as Kenny Powers, a former professional baseball pitcher, who after an up and down career in the major leagues is forced to return to his hometown middle-school in Shelby, North Carolina, as a substitute physical education teacher. The series was produced by Will Ferrell's production company, Gary Sanchez Productions. Years after he turned his back on his hometown, a burned-out major league ballplayer returns to teach physical education at his old middle school. Still trying to reclaim his fame he starts on a comeback, righting his previous wrongs, but ends up messing everything up for himself in the end. While not based on the life of former Major League Baseball relief pitcher John Rocker, the show's creators do cite Rocker's attitude as an inspiration. Former major league pitcher Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams has often been cited as the inspiration for the Powers character. Fat Possum, the indie label behind Black Keys and Youth Lagoon, is releasing this two-disc Eastbound and Down soundtrack on April 24, 2012. The soundtrack features the likes of Too $hort, The Stooges and Kenny Rogers and is interspersed with dialogue from the hit show (Sample title: "Child Molesters At Chuck E. Cheese"). The album's liner notes are written by Powers' right-hand man Stevie Jankowski (Steve Little). In a statement, Jankowski wrote, "This is the music that Kenny Powers rocks out to when he's getting ready in the morning. This is the music Kenny Powers listens to in the late hours, when the night terrors come and we are all children again." Powers himself weighed in: "When my a** was 19 years old, I changed the face of professional baseball. Everyone wanted a piece of my s**t. Just a man with a mind for victory and an arm like a f**king cannon. But sometimes when you bring the thunder, you get lost in the storm." Deep. The show's unique opening theme music is "Goin' Down" by Freddie King. In a July 2012 surprise announcement, Danny McBride and Producers Will Ferrell and Jody Hill confirmed that Eastbound & Down would return for a 4th season.
