A rebellious youth, Matisyahu first touched on his spirituality while camping in Colorado during high school. His growing interest in Judaism led him to Israel, and upon returning to the states, he studied reggae and hip-hop music in-depth at a school in Bend, Ore. Through ensuing years of musical and religious development, Matisyahu honed his message around the values he adopted in the wake of a confused adolescence. “Judaism is at the core of what I am, so it gets expressed in my music,” Matisyahu said.
