Kelly kicked things off with the Breakaway hit “Walk Away,” following with the My December cut “How I Feel” and an impassioned delivery of the new single “Never Again.” Whatever cathartic anger might’ve been spilling out during that song, however, dissipated quickly as the first of two Q&A sessions began. While declaring her love for the energetic crowd — packed into a small soundstage on the 20th Century Fox lot in Century City, California — Clarkson pointed out that even the people she likes at RCA Records were present. She got her first big laugh of the night when she jokingly added that the number of people she likes at the label has been shrinking recently. When asked whether her public battle with RCA over My December was scary, Clarkson insisted it wasn’t. “It’s not about making people upset,” she told the grade-school-age fan who posed the question. “It’s about not settling. … Nobody wants a sequel to Breakaway, because sequels are never as good as the first one.” After a few more questions, a few more jokes and some flirtatious banter with one of the many audience members professing a crush on her, Kelly ripped into the My December burner “Judas” before slowing for the blockbuster ballad “Because of You.” During her final Q&A, she told fans that she’d love to have Weird Al cover one of her songs, but she was at a loss as to which one to suggest. She also admitted to having a soft spot for Thin Mint cookies and revealed that she’s learned to approach the performance of her more emotional songs like an actress playing a role, so that it doesn’t become too draining. As if to demonstrate her point, the next song was the heart-wrenching, slow-building “Sober,” which begins with Clarkson singing, “I don’t know/ This could break my heart or save me/ Nothing’s real/ Until you let go completely.” But it was the final song of the night that gave audience members a chance to let go completely. “Since U Been Gone” got everyone bouncing, screaming and waving their arms in the air.
