This Original Interview Magazine Advertising Poster features a retro-style portrait of designer Marc Jacobs as artist Andy Warhol , photographed by renowned photographer Mikael Jansson , for the June / July 2008 issue celebrating the 80th Anniversary of the life of Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol created Interview Magazine in 1969. Sometimes he said he started it to "give the kids something to do." Sometimes it was suggested that he started Interview to get press credentials for the New York Film Festival. Probably both explanations are true. But Warhol was also a magazine fan, and he loved making them as much as he loved making movies. In fact the original Inter/VIEW was subtitled "a film journal." But after a few years it evolved into Andy Warhol's Interview, a ground-breaking magazine that brought talk into print , using the question-and-answer format to bring the reader into conversation with people from the worlds of film , art , music , fashion , and much more. It inspired a whole new generation of magazines including , in fact , People. During the years he published Interview , Andy Warhol changed the nature of art itself. He evolved the philosophy of "business art," extending the realm of art activities to include movies , TV , books , theater , fashion , and design. At its best, Interview has been magazine art. Initially founded by artist Andy Warhol and John Wilcock in 1969 , Interview was dedicated to the cult of celebrity which fascinated Warhol, it featured cutting-edge graphics and interviews of celebrities. These interviews were usually unedited or edited in the eccentric fashion of Warhol's books and The Philosophy of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again. The first head of advertising for the magazine was Susan Blond. Complimentary copies of Interview were often given to the "in-crowd" to lure them into contributing to the magazine, and given as freebies to attract potential new advertisers. Toward the end of his life, as Warhol withdrew from everyday oversight of his magazine, it became more focused on presenting the point of view of the fashion elite (under editor Bob Colacello), and a more conventional editorial style was introduced. However , Warhol continued to act as ambassador for the magazine , distributing issues in the street to passers by and creating ad hoc book-signing events on the streets of Manhattan. WWD has reported that fashion designer Marc Jacobs was shot by Mikael Jansson for this 80th Anniversary Issue after Todd Eberle spotted him at a party and told Interview's Glenn O'Brien "Gee, Marc Jacobs is the new Andy Warhol." Women's Wear Daily tells of how Marc was told of similarities between himself and Warhol but claims "Warhol is Warhol. He's practically a god. I thought, 'I'm going to get a lot of hell for this.'"
