Established in 1993 by Paul Taylor, partly as a way to take his choreography to smaller cities, Taylor 2, under the rehearsal direction of Tom Patrick, has only six dancers. This is an intimate group, structured somewhat after Mr. Taylor’s original 1954 company; what the dancers accomplish in presenting such rigorous work, despite the occasional bump, slip and even one painful-looking crash into the wings, is full of valor. This Joyce program captures the dark and light sides of Mr. Taylor’s choreographic ingenuity, beginning with “Runes,” restaged for a cast of six in 1998. The title hints at the mysteries behind the trenchant, ritualistic movement. Set to a haunting piano score by Gerald Busby, “Runes” is a mesmerizing accomplishment in terms of the structure — Mr. Taylor designs patterns that expand and contract with moody radiance — and the dance itself. Bodies freeze in angular poses or spring up in sharp, vertical jumps and land in earthy descent, as the choreography dives underneath quickening musical notes. In the work’s frenetic solo, Jamie Rae Walker is hard-edged and brisk, yet never harsh. Later, in the duet from “Roses,” opposite Justin Kahan, she shows her versatility, giving herself over to the dance’s romantic sweep. There are rougher moments in “Profiles,” from 1979, performed by Alison Cook, Latra Wilson, John Eirich and Nic Ceynowa; the men don’t yet possess the upper-body strength and control required to make Mr. Taylor’s knotty lifts look effortless. The six are more in their element in “Arden Court,” an ebullient dance restaged for a smaller cast in 1994. It ends with jumps on the diagonal, and as the dancers soared through space, their joy was palpable, most impressively Ms. Wilson’s and Mr. Eirich’s. Spreading the gospel of Mr. Taylor never looked so easy and free.
