Balanchine's last muse, ballerina Suzanne Farrell, is dedicated to reviving and reconstructing his works. She brought her small company to the Fall for Dance Festival with the still startling Pithoprakta, originally the second part of a l968 ballet set to Iannis Xenakis's spiky music. A section of the score serves as the backdrop, a mathematical diagram of crisscrossing black lines and numerals on dazzling white. The corps, sleek in black unitards, are as frenzied as the jagged sound, jumping, arms punching upwards, falling flat, writhing and twisting into angular positions. In white and gold, lead couple Elizabeth Holowchuk and Matthew Prescott personify the Greek title, "action by probabilities", in choreography that made Prescott both aggressive and cowering, as if bewitched by Holowchuk, a slinky, coolly detached goddess. This work, still something of a shocker, does show a fascinating facet of this endlessly inventive choreographic genius.
