New York City Ballet (often referred to as just City Ballet or by its initials, NYCB) is a ballet company founded in 1933 by choreographer George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein with musical director Leon Barzin. The company grew from an earlier troupe known as the Ballet Society. 2009 Winter Season features some of the Company’s most spectacular works: George Balanchine’s breathtaking Vienna Waltzes, Jerome Robbins’ immortal West Side Story Suite, and the charming full-length Coppélia, which tells the tale of a mad inventor and the life-like doll he creates. NYCB will also present three not-to-be-missed world premieres, each certain to be major dance events, as well as encore performances of Alexei Ratmansky’s critically-acclaimed Concerto DSCH, listed on New York Magazine’s “The Approval Matrix” as: “the best new ballet in a long, long time.” Contemporary masterpieces returning to the stage include a major revival of Angelin Preljocaj’s avant-garde La Stravaganza, Christopher Wheeldon’s kaleidoscopic Mercurial Manoeuvres, and Jorma Elo’s pyrotechnic Slice to Sharp. The winter repertory will also feature Peter Martins’ Papillons, not seen since its premiere in 1994, and our monumental new staging of Les Noces, with four grand pianos and a full choir onstage. The 2009 Winter Season has been specially designed to showcase the incredible range of NYCB's repertory. City Ballet still has the largest repertoire by far of any American ballet company, often staging 60 ballets or more in its winter and spring seasons at Lincoln Center each year and 20 or more in its summer season in Saratoga Springs. City Ballet has performed The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream and many more. City Ballet has featured many great performers since its formation.
