On November 3, a year after the presidential election, HBO will air By the People: The Election of Barack Obama, a documentary that takes an "all-access pass" look at the Obama campaign. Produced by actor Edward Norton and directed by Amy Rice and Alicia Sams, the film follows the candidate from Iowa all the way through to Obama's presidential victory. While Obama and his family are, obviously, the stars of the show, you see much more of them in the opening Iowa segments than you do near the end. Though the filmmakers were always fighting for access, as the campaign expanded, access became more restricted -- in part because the campaign grew larger, and in part because the filmmakers couldn't afford to follow the campaign from state to state. "We had to choose our moments more carefully. ... It went from a very innocent time to a very scheduled program," says Sams. Were there any big surprises or disappointments? "He was always so calm," says Rice. "That's great for a president, but it's hard for a filmmaker. You want a little drama." Though most of the film's revelations come in its private moments, there is one crucial public moment that you may never have seen before, at least not like this. In one of his last campaign speeches, as Obama spoke about his grandmother's death, Rice was one of the only photographers close enough and at the right angle to catch him crying. "It was a very emotional moment," she says. While he was clearly a success as a candidate, it's far too soon to tell whether Obama will be a success as a president. But the film, says Norton, isn't tied to Obama's popularity or even to his presidency. "Whatever the ultimate review of his presidency, people can say this moment was a singular moment in American history. And here's at least one document of how it happened. ... We feel very happy and privileged just to have contributed to documenting that moment in history."
