Memphis is a musical written by David Bryan (of Bon Jovi fame) (music and lyrics) and Joe DiPietro (lyrics and book) based on a concept by George W. George. The musical is loosely based on the story of Dewey Phillips, a Memphis DJ , one of the first white DJs to play black music in the 1950s. It premiered in the 2003-04 season at both the North Shore Music Theatre, Massachusetts, and TheatreWorks, California. The musical opened on Broadway on September 23, 2009 in previews and officially on October 19, 2009 at the Shubert Theatre. The creative team includes director Christopher Ashley, choreography by Sergio Trujillo, costume design by Paul Tazewell, scenic design by David Gallo, and lighting design by Howell Binkley. The cast includes many of the cast members from the pre-Broadway productions, including Chad Kimball (as the DJ Huey Calhoun) and Montego Glover (as Felicia Farrell).
