On Jan. 5, after the Christmas tree and mouse costumes are safely tucked away, New York City Ballet’s winter season gets going. After an opening night performance of Peter Martins’ sprawling new ballet for twenty-six principal dancers, “Naïve and Sentimental Music,” set to a chaotic, eponymous score by John Adams, there will be six performances of Balanchine’s gorgeous “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” from 1962 (Jan. 6-12). With his inimitable sense of balance, Balanchine decided to divide the ballet into two parts. The action, a series of romantic entanglements abetted by Puck’s careless application of a magic love potion—as well as Titania’s temporary crush on Bottom, a hapless donkey—is confined to the first act. In second, a glorious wedding divertissement (a series of dances) is held in an idealized court in Ancient Greece, with Theseus and Hippolyta (Queen of the Amazons) in attendance. It is an oddity of the ballet that Titania and Oberon, King and Queen of the Faireis, never dance together, but Oberon, a role originally created for Edward Villella, has one of the most exciting, quick-moving, silvery solos ever seen. Some dancers look a little bit pained as they perform it, and one can see why. It’s a killer. Titania, on the other hand, is regal and serene at all times, even when she falls for the donkey. She was marvellously performed last season by the newly-minted principal dancer Teresa Reichlen, and surely will be again this time around. Look for her in the casting announcements, which appear here one week in advance. But it is Oberon’s attendants, a host of fairies and bugs performed, for the most part, by students from the School of American Ballet, who have the final word in this ballet, in a magical tableau that lingers in the mind long after the curtain has come down on Balanchine’s forest glen. City Ballet still has the largest repertoire by far of any American ballet company, often staging 60 ballets or more in its winter and spring seasons at Lincoln Center each year and 20 or more in its summer season in Saratoga Springs. City Ballet has performed The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream and many more. City Ballet has featured many great performers since its formation.
