The story revolves around a town whose water supply has been poisoned by a deadly toxin. The small-town citizens of Ogden Marsh, Iowa, are going berserk because a military plane has crashed in a nearby swamp, and something top secret and very nasty is seeping into the water supply. “The Crazies’’ sets up a mood of all-American good cheer only to immediately puncture it with intense dread: a high school baseball game is interrupted when the town drunk wanders onto the field, eerily silent and toting a gun , only this time he hasn’t been drinking alcohol. By the end of “The Crazies,’’ we’ve been led from small-town normalcy to something close to the end of the world, and it’s a measure of the film’s lean craftsmanship that the widening of scope has been incremental, almost unnoticed.
